This week I gave the learning sessions of the Personal Period Workshop. To learn and talk about the menstruation cycle, myths around it and the symptoms that go hand in hand with feminine hormones.
I loved it and I learned a lot. About the cycle, because I also realize that I know so little. Not only about the cycle, and what menstruation really is, but also about education and language. Because how do I explain something in my second language that needs to be translated in Xhosa. A language that works different, it doesn’t have a word for ovulation for example (or at least not that the translator knows of). And the words they use are also more about the sound they make, sometimes the words sound like the meaning. Next to this the mamma’s need to understand and to be able to explain it to their girls in the age of 9 – 15.
I struggled, and experimented with eggs and sperm. Good sperm that stays alive much longer than ‘bad’ sperm, which makes it possible to fall pregnant during your menstruation. I also experimented with the uterus lining and the developing of it, to ‘house’ a fertilized egg. Today I heard the metaphor of soil for a seed to grow into a plant (or baby in this case). If the egg is not fertilized the lining is not needed and leaves the body: menstruation!
Next to learning a lot on this topic I have been exploring entrepreneurship. I visited Sparrow Society and was inspired by their success story. From starting working in a garage to 21 full time employees in 3 years’ time. Kate, the founder, is a lovely and honest lady. She shared her experience of good days and bad days, and that the good days make her forget about the not-such-a-good days. I guess it is like life itself. Today I experience a not-so-good day. Sometimes everything feels so overwhelming. Our project, the little time I have here, the future, the work that is done in Holland. Sometimes, like today, I just want to hide. There is this voice inside me that makes me doubt. Who am I to think that this can work? What if it all fails? What if I can’t handle it?
I guess this is the journey. The entrepreneurial journey. Of doubt, of faith, on keep on believing in your gut, no matter what. And yes I will be challenged along the way. Challenged to keep reflecting, on where we stand and where we want to go. Challenged to keep the yin and the yang balanced, to create the stillness inside to be able to listen to my gut.
And when I listen, here today in the Botanical Gardens, very carefully I can hear it say: ‘Keep on going, your voice wants to be heard’.
